From the first day, we were determined to write and perform our own material. Most of the other bands in Toronto were cover bands gigging in bars and clubs in which the crowd would be disappointed if it didn't recognize every song that was played. And these bands had no respect for bands that wrote their own songs. ' they'd say. 'Are you playing those songs because you can't copy? ' Playing a Deep Purple classic such as 'Highway Star' was something that we'd mastered a long time ago. I'd learned a lot from studying Ian Paice's drumming on the track, but we didn't want to measure our musicianship by how well we copied.

Maybe that's why when I was fifteen years old, inspired by the album cover of Goodbye Cream, I would walk round Yorkdale Shopping Centre wearing tails and green fluorescent striped pants. ' I listened for a while. 'Fucking cool, man. ' I really did. And I still do. 'You take care,' said Lemmy. ' We were the next act due on stage and we needed to get ready, so I left Lemmy's caravan and headed down to the cesspit of our changing room, where I washed my hair in a cracked sink. Then I heard it.
